We have all seen the marketing commercials that promise an “Easy Button.” Tech platforms, search engines, and social media networks desperately want you to believe that digital marketing is just that simple. Just click here, accept this automated recommendation, and watch the sales roll in.
But as Ashley points out in our latest behind-the-scenes video, those automated “easy buttons” are exactly why dabbling in marketing can be so dangerous for your business.
The 78% Illusion
In the video, Ashley shares a real look at the backend of a Google Ads campaign. The platform gave the campaign an optimization score in the high 70s (around 78%).
If a client were to log in and see that score, their immediate reaction would likely be panic: “What is going wrong? Why aren’t we at 100%? Fix it!”
But reaching that perfect 100% score isn’t always about running a smarter, more efficient campaign. Often, it is just about doing exactly what the platform’s algorithm wants you to do. And in this case, the algorithm’s recommendations were completely misaligned with the client’s actual business goals.
The High Cost of a “Perfect” Score
To get that “perfect” 100% optimization score, the platform suggested three things:
- Increase the budget by 125%: The platform recognized that the ads were performing well and suggested more than doubling the budget. While more ads would likely bring in more revenue, it completely ignores the reality of the client’s actual budget constraints. It’s easy for a computer to suggest spending more money; it’s a lot harder for a small business to actually pay for it.
- Switch to a Performance Max (AI) campaign: Artificial Intelligence campaigns are powerful, but they aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution. In this specific case, the client had previously used a Performance Max campaign, and it failed to spend their budget effectively. These AI campaigns often crave massive, national-level budgets and data sets, which simply didn’t match this local business’s needs.
- Set up new experimental shopping campaigns: Another automated suggestion designed to broaden the scope and spend of the account, adding unnecessary complexity that the client did not ask for.
Strategy Requires Human Context
Algorithms are incredibly smart, but they lack human context. A computer doesn’t know that your local business only wants to spend a specific amount this quarter, or that you are currently at maximum capacity and don’t actually need to double your lead volume right now.
When you just “dabble” in marketing, it is incredibly tempting to log in, see a low optimization score, and blindly click the “Apply All Recommendations” button to make the platform happy. But doing so means you are letting a robot dictate your financial strategy.
As Ashley perfectly summarizes at the end of her video:
“Dabbling in marketing is fun if you’re doing it for fun, but it is not a business strategy if you’re doing it for real.”
At Vitality South, our job isn’t to get you a gold star and a 100% score from an algorithm. Our job is to protect your budget, apply human strategy to digital tools, and ensure every dollar you spend is actually moving the needle for your specific goals.
