As the Director of Operations here at Vitality South, my daily focus is usually on efficiency, workflows, and making sure we deliver on our promise to be “The Agency That Finishes”. But lately, my biggest focus has been on one thing: change.
Since the first of the year, our agency has experienced a whirlwind of evolution. We’ve welcomed incredibly talented new people to our Tupelo team. We’ve rolled out new policies and overhauled internal processes to keep up with our growth. And, like the rest of the digital marketing world, we’ve been rapidly integrating AI and new tech tools into our daily workflows to stay ahead of the curve.
Change at this scale is thrilling, but let’s be honest, it can also be exhausting. When the tools, the faces, and the rules are all shifting at once, how do you keep your team grounded?
The answer, I’ve found, always comes back to company culture.
Culture Isn’t Just a Page on Our Website
It’s easy to talk about culture when things are static. But a company’s culture is truly tested when you throw massive new variables into the mix. Our Core Commitments at Vitality South aren’t just buzzwords we put on a website; they are the very operating system that helps us navigate change.
Here is how leaning heavily into our established values has helped us thrive during this transitional season:
1. “Learn & Grow Together” (Embracing AI and New Tools)
Integrating AI and entirely new software stacks into an established business could easily cause friction. But because one of our core commitments is to Learn & Grow Together, our team didn’t see these tools as a threat; they saw them as an opportunity. We don’t expect anyone to know everything on day one. By leaning into our core value of GROWTH, we approach these evolving technologies with intention, curiosity, and courage rather than fear.
2. “No Skunking” (Handling the Growing Pains)
Process overhauls and new policies naturally come with a few bumps in the road. Things break, workflows get messy, and frustration can creep in. That’s where our No Skunking rule saves the day. We keep it positive. That doesn’t mean fake positivity; it means constructive problem-solving. We encourage our team to call out the friction points, but we expect them to bring solutions to the table, too. Negativity stays out of the studio, making room for the ENERGY and momentum needed to push through the growing pains.
3. “Own the Outcome” (Empowering New People)
Bringing fresh talent into the agency is always exciting, but onboarding them into a fast-paced environment requires immense trust. By leaning into our commitment to Own the Outcome, we empower our new hires from day one. We don’t hide behind processes or pass the buck; we take responsibility. When new team members see our veterans leading with this level of accountability, it sets the standard immediately and builds trust fast.
4. Focusing on Health and Connection
Through all this transition, we’ve had to intentionally guard our value of HEALTH. Adapting to change requires a lot of mental bandwidth. As Director of Ops, I’ve had to make sure our new processes actually serve our team’s mental wellness and promote a sustainable, healthy pace. We work smart, not constantly. Furthermore, maintaining our value of CONNECTION, checking in on each other, listening, and actually liking being around one another, has been the glue holding all these new pieces together.
Change is Inevitable; Culture is Intentional
You can’t stop your industry from evolving, and you shouldn’t want to stop your business from growing. The introduction of AI, new methodologies, and fresh perspectives has made Vitality South sharper, faster, and more creative than ever before.
But without our culture, this year of change could have easily derailed us. Instead, our values have acted as a compass, ensuring that no matter what new tools we use or what new processes we implement, we remain the steady, thoughtful partners our clients trust.
If there’s one piece of advice I can give to any business leader navigating a season of heavy transition: don’t let your culture become an afterthought. Lean into it. It is the very engine that will drive you and your team across the finish line.
